I'm looking into buying a 1997 F-250 crewcab 4x4 powerstroke diesel. The truck has been sitting for about 5yrs because they suspect the transmission was going out. So they just parked it and bought another truck. He says he thinks it has 260,000 miles on it and he had the transmission rebuilt at 180,000. I don't know for sure how many miles are on it because of the digital odometer and dead batteries. It's a E4OD trans which is a pretty good trans from my understanding. I pulled the dipstick and the fluid is a little dirty but doesn't smell burnt. They said it would do fine til it got hot, then it would stop pulling. I'm not sure if "hot" means overheating or normal operating temp. I think I'll try a fluid and filter change. The main thing I want to know is, what is the box bolted on the inside of the driver fender? Is it the brain? The one on the truck is missing. Also, What other things should I do or look for in order to get this sitting truck up and running? Any info will be greatly appreicated.
