Another E4OD thread - 95’ Supercab 460
The truck is a 95’ F250 with a 460. Engine and trans have an original 140,000 miles. I’ve owned it since around 100k.
The truck hard shifts between 1-2 shift when not under heavy throttle. It’s not a terribly hard shift but enough to make me concerned. The trans also seems to “shuffle” quickly between 3-4? shift. It hardly stays in that gear before the rpms drop quickly and the truck lurches forward faster. There also is a hesitation when kicking in and out of OD around that 35mph mark, again its not terrible but definitely noticeable. The thud going into overdrive is probably the worst part. Everything described here has been consistent since I’ve owned the truck.
Another phenomena I’ve just recently picked up on is a hesitation/hiccup when i use the left blinker while the truck is in OD. It seems to only effect the truck when its in OD and only seems to do it when using the left blinker as far as I can tell.
All my lights are functional which I know can sometimes be related to these issues. I believe my speedometer is a few MPH off, could this be causing any of these issues?
Now I'm more familiar with GM transmissions, but I had similar issues with a Chevy Suburban I used to own. I took it to a reputable (key word here) transmission shop and they rebuilt the valve body and it was night and day difference. It shifted so much better.
Had it been rebuilt or do you know? the only thing that has ever gone wrong with my 97 was the Trans. had to be rebuilt little after 100k miles. 171500 miles now. And I change the fluid every 30,000 miles. I also keep it running really cool. I bypassed the radiator with my Cooling lines and put in another bolt on cooler. I never saw the reason to run trans fluid thru a radiator in the high desert. 100 degrees is common here.
One other thing to check is the TPS. If you replace that. Buy Ford only.
It is the original transmission and has not been rebuilt to my knowledge. The truck is an F250HD and came with a factory trans cooler I believe. I don’t work the truck all that hard aside from the occasional road trip with boat in tow. Even then, the truck is hardly loaded to 50% GCWR. Im in Michigan and we seldom see days over 90. The 460 puts off a load of heat but I believe the trans stays sufficiently cool.
I do know that the first 100k of its life it was used almost exclusively as a tow vehicle. First owner was an old ranch owner who pulled a livestock fifth wheel and the second owner was also an older gentlemen who used it tow his travel trailer to deer camp. That being said, I’m sure the trans is a bit tired at this point but the truck has been really well maintained.
I think my truck will outlive me. They seem to be bullet proof. But, if the trans. Goes out again, i think i will replace rather than rebuild. A 460 is just that a 460. Service them and they go on sucking down gas.....and on....and on.....
