Hello All,
93 E-350 7.3L which I have put a lot into. The truck had an issue when going uphill it would start to loose steam badly going up a hill followed by a real bad burning smell like clutch plates and smoke. The rear has blown out twice from teeth breaking off. So this being a work truck I said let me just replace the trans and torque converter as it orginal and the fact I kept blowing rears so I did. New tranny goes in and a new TPS again. After adjusting the TPS to the corrrect voltage it gets me from 1.2V to 4.2V. Shifts fairly smooth but now the same thing I go up a hill and it seems like the truck tranny is working so hard since it doesn't downshift going up the hill and I am smelling the buring smell again. I have the pedal to the floor. What could this be? Is it a sensor, a harness to the trans? Or is it engine related....Do I need to mess with the fuel adjustment (if there is one)? The engine runs great so i really do think its in the tranny side electrical? Torque converter not locking or unlocking?
that does sound like she's not unlocking for ya.
take it to your local trans shop now before it hurts something real bad and takes her all out.
i would guess what your smelling would be the lock up disc in there slipping due to so much torque with the diesel while going so slow without it unlocking.
if you manually downshift into 2nd does that releases it? the first thing i would have tried instantly before quickly pulling over.don't run 'er anymore like this.could cost ya thousands.
Trq convector isn't locking and my guess is that you have overheated it too many times and done damage to something. I have no idea I'd an e4od is a full locking tranny or not but sounds to me like the converter and valve body have slight damage. As for the rear ends they are not adjusted correctly. Either to tight or lose but rear ends don't blow in auto trannys often. And if your tranny and rear end are suffering you better believe your vetting the top end in your motor to hot witch can lead to cracked heads. So get some gauges to monitor temps and calm er down on the hills haha
The Tranny is new along with the converter. This did it from day one of the new install and as well as the old tranny. The tranny was a factory rebuilt and I went with an upgraded torque converter. Isn't there something with the connector that attaches to these trans? I read something in this forum about it but didn't know if this was related to my symtoms? I will try to stay off the hills lol. I just want some simple checks before I let the tranny shop look at. They always want to sell you something crazy!
You shouldn't be going uphill in 4th (OD) gear. If you're towing something I wouldn't be in OD ever. Unless you have like 4.10 gears in the rear and you're going over 75mph and it's flat. What gears do you have? Vehicles aren't setup to downshift umless your RPMs are real low. It does sound like something is wrong anyway. A new transmission shouldn't be smoking the clutches unless you're really abusing it. Like towing 10.000lbs. uphill in OD. I would talk to trans. shop. And tell him the new is doing the same thing the old one was and see what he has to say.
if it's a fresh reman, then it's under warranty.tell them your not interested in buying anything, but that you suspect there is a ground issue or something going on with the tps/vss signals for the trans because it should instantly unlock the converter and downshift to 3rd when you stab the throttle and take off like a bugger with a strong pull in the seat.enough to make you say weeee lol even as n/a.
if these signals are not clean, the ecm isn't knowing you just matted the throttle and it's remaining locked up and you'll just smoke another trans.
there is enough info getting to the trans (supposed to be) that the trans will downshift from od in an instant, dependent on the speed and load both.it's not supposed to hold locked nor od if you goose it.with a loaded truck, the more sensitive it is to downshifting also.it's a decent modern enough trans.nothing required for the driver to do at all when operating correctly.should be instant unlock/downshift/strong pull/rapid increase in speed/and then lock back up,then eventually as you let back off her,or gain enough speed, she'll enter od again.you should never have to use the od button.that should always be a preferred option under rare conditions.it's a smart enough ecm to control it very well.
you need to take it in asap.something is way wrong.if you continue to run it like this, you will brake it.
you would have thought they would have test drove the truck after rebuilding the trans...........oh wait.you probably just bought the reaman trans and installed it yourself right?
Smell/taste the tranny fluid. If its black and smells/tastes burnt your in trouble. Could be the internal pump ( can't remember the exact name) sounds like its adjusted at to low pressure cuz my buddies was to high and it would lock just off idle haha it was fun truck till the tranny blew 2 weeks later but if its too low it will never lock correctly
