Question Tranny help PLS

1990 3.0L A4LD 126K miles
On my 4th tranny!!!!!!

the Haynes book says all models thru 95 use the A4LD and I found an 87 w/ a blown motor, so I swapped trans. Overdrive plug was different. bad tranny has 2 sensors on the valve body and "good" tranny has 1.

Now when I reach 55 mph the tranny starts slipping, actually it "goes away"
once I drop back down to about 45 mph it kicks back in.

otherwise it's fine. great power curve and smooth shift, just no OD

thinking about swapping valve bodies or should I try the computer first?

Question

My guess would be that the over drive clutch is worn out. A word on the A4LD. This tranny is a decendent of the C5. What is a C5? the transmition that was designed for ........The PINTO This was a light weight tranny and Ford claims that the A4LD is tougher but seriously take a light tranny built for an 85 HP 4 bager add an OD put it behind an engine with 55 more HP and more torque in a 4,000 pound van and what do you get? Right a dead tranny.

I'm not sure which sensors or solenoids are on the good trans. I have rebuilt a couple of 1987 A4LDs and there is one TCC solenoid on the valve body. The Torque Converter Clutch (TCC) is not overdrive. It locks the torque converter up when the vehicle is crusing and not under load. The lockup will sometimes feel like a shift into overdrive.

Did you mis-match the torque converters? If so, it could be a problem. Keep the same torque converter with the same trans. If you did, the torque converter can be bad too. If the internal seals for the piston in the converter are bad, it will dump your transmission oil pressure causing a slip. If you can get a trans gauge and tap into the ports while you drive, measure the fluid pressure. Look for a sharp drop when you take your foot off of the pedal.

Thanx for explaining the TCC. Don't know much "yet" about the guts of a tranny. Got a book on order.

Didn't change/swap TCs. I'll try the gauge and see what happens.

again, thanx for the info.
