Fuel Filter Change

I finally got around to changing my fuel filter and I think the lower one, at least, was original (notice the difference in the bottom of the filter - they changed them in 2010 I think). They both looked pretty bad.

Since they're done, I have noticed better throttle response.

Ouch, good thing you got it done. Changing that lower one can be a bear. I had to buy the 37mm socket with 18" extension. Glad to hear you got it done.

For guys that still need to buy one it's 36 mm and the top one is 24 mm. Don't use the square drive to remove them use a socket. Sq. drive will break the cap.

Oops, you're right, I meant to type 36mm, must have fat fingered it. Thanks for catching it.

And for those that don't want to shell out for hte socket, you can't get at it with anything else, I've tried every tool in my garage, it's just not happening.

There's a specialty socket for this:
S3624, Socket, Filter Flip, 24 and 36mm, 3/8" square drive

For $32 it's not that bad, a 36mm spindle socket at Autozone was around $20 last time I checked. This might be the only time SO is cheaper than buying two Duralast sockets.

Oil filter wrench... One that fits Fram PH8A or Motorcraft FL1A works perfectly fine on the lower cap.

That's what I used from 2003-2010 before I stumbled upon the Snap-on socket.

36 mm = 1 7/16"
Worth trying if you have big SAE set as those big sockets can get pretty expensive. I have box set, but the size jumps from 1 3/8 to 1 1/2
Anybody knows the torque?

i wish, anyone ever have trouble getting the cap on the primary off. I'm anticipating problems next time I change filters as I when I put it on last time I had to oil the cap threads and over toruqe a bit (in the alternative cap gets tight to install if only changed bi-annually - not many miles now days) The time prior I had the dealer change the filter and they must have cross threaded or something as boy was the cap a bigger to put back on. Anyway I'm figuring it will require breaking to get off. Thought?. Of course I will make sure to have a replacement cap onhand next time I change but don't want to damage the housing in the process.

Some oil filters come with a new cap permanently attached to the filter element. They would be the bad ones, the dreaded NAPA oil filters, and woe betide anyone who uses one... Seriously, don't use them, use an OEM filter which snaps into the OEM cap. Same with the fuel filters, they snap into the OEM caps. Funny thing, I changed the oil filter on my wife's Mercedes a little while ago, and it was exactly like a 1/5th size version of the 6.0 PSD oil filter. If you took a picture with no size reference you would not be able to tell them apart, it is only about 2" tall and very cute.

I used a oil filter wrench that i use for my coolant filter, and put it around the big part of the cap. Spun it right off. cant really use it to put it back on though
