large rectangular plug on valve cover

You can test your glow plugs without removing the valve covers you know. Just unplug the electrical connector at the inboard side of each valve cover and you'll see 9 flat pins in the pass thru connector that is part of the valve cover gasket.
Grab an ohm meter and test the forward two and rear two pins against battery ground. A reading of less than 2 ohms means the glow plugs are good. A small test lead or second set of eyes helps this process since it's a little tricky to touch the leads to the right place and watch the meter at the same time, but it's easier than pulling a valve cover.

Robin used to have a good picture of doing this. Perhaps someone can find it.

Those things can be a pain. There's a rubber gasket type thing inside the connection that keeps things clean, but can make it difficult to remove. Press down on the center part and use a little flat blade screwdriver to get it started. It will come unplugged then.

Man this is perfect, I have looked for several months (not real hard but in passing on the forum) trying to figure out how get those connectors unplugged. I've tried a few times but I get to the point of frustration and decide to stop before I break them (I have a bad history with this type of connector). My starting problem was simply a gpr but I know it's time to ohm the plugs and go from there.
Thanks to all on this forum and the great info
