New Member here and first time Ford owner. I finally found a rust free 1966 4x4 to match the one my brother had when I was growing up.
I knew going into it that someday I would need to update the wiring. As I found out 3 days after I had it that day was here. The altenator went and when I went to take it off to replace it... The wires just snapped in my hands. I had to cut back about a foot of wire to find ok wire to splice into.
So I started my search for a new wiring harness. I am trying to figure out what is the best wiring harness to buy. Money vs. Ease of installing it. I have found pricing from 250 all the way to 1000 and over. The truck currently has a 390 in it. I don't really care about staying stock with the old style 6 block tube fuses. I have a friend who has rewired Jeeps before that is willing to help me rewire it. But he is scared like I am of getting into this and realizing you didn't get the right set-up(To cheap of brand. No instructions or customer support.). It happened to him before.
First and foremost, welcome to FTE!!!. I am basically lazy and decided on going with reproduction harnesses, same color wire codes and connectors and a matter of unplugging the old and plugging in the new, very pleased with quality. Unfortunately have not found a company that makes reproduction dash harness so I repaired/replaced, or added a couple circuits which I found takes patience.
The topic has come up on a number of occasions and members who installed the kits gave them favorable reviews. Fortunately your friend has some experience, I was going to suggest buying the wiring manual, if purchased from the source only cost $7, but going with the kit not sure if the manual would be any help. I am certain members with experience installing the kits will be chimming in with some advice.
Again, welcome to FTE, looking forward to your input!!

The wiring you linked in looks to be solid. The kits looks complete and if it uses Ford wiring colors, that would be great as you should be able to compare them to the shop manual with any luck.
And if you dont mind me asking, where did you find a rust free Slick in Wi?

Same place all rust free vehicles come from in Wisconsin... The SOUTH! Hahaha.
She isn't a virgin by any means... The story I was told was a guy brought the body(F10 vin body) up from from Alabama(Title shows it was titled in AL) and placed it on a chasis from a 1972. I was told the engine was out of a 76 LTD. But from the little research I have done I believe the engine is a 72 390 probably was with the chasis. I am the second owner since the resto-mod was done in 2002.
Theres actually another rust free Slick for sale down the road from me. He started @ 17,000... He has dropped the price weekly. I seen today its down to 9,500.

No 1976 LTD came with a 390 (5 valve cover bolts per side), as 1971 was the last year Passenger Cars came with FE engines.
1976 LTD could have a 302, 351M, 351W, 400 or 460.
Thank you NB. Yeah I figured out when I went to get the altenator that it either wasn't a 390 or wasn't from a 76. From the pictures I have found of 390's its a 390. I am sure you would know where I would find the numbers on the block? The engine is on the list of things that need to be dealt with. I am hoping later then sooner. I can hear a lifter or a spring clicking. I haven't hand the nerve to check compression... The rings seem wore pretty good.
If you havent purchased a harness yet my vote goes for EZ wiring's kit. I installed mine last summer and it was super easy. All wires are color coded and labeled. I went with the Mini 20 and it has plenty of extra circuits if you plan on upgrades.

Just my experience
Hey thanks. I just looked it up and the price is unbelievable. I am going to order it tonight. I am hoping to get a start on it in the next couple weeks.

Take your time with the harness and do it right. The kit doesnt come with any sort of plug for the bulkhead so i bought a 22 pin or something like that weatherpak bulkhead to run my wires through. Figuring out the switches may take a little bit of playing around but ask me and ill help out. I bought the colored kit and the wires are color coded and labeled.
Hi I'm a new member as well and looking to take on the re-wiring task this spring. I'm looking at an American Auto Wire kit but the description says that it is not a harness for restoration rather an upgrade and would require a alternator upgrade. Seems like all of the kits I find for the 1966 F100 have the same theme. Anyone else run into this. I'm glad I found this forum. Got the truck about a month ago. 1966 F100 Custom Cab pretty solid but plenty of work to be done. Her name it Stella!! (Gotta have a name for it).
So heres the latest with my situation. I was going to go with the EZ wiring kit... But it is a general kit for hot rods... The kit I posted had some components for pre-1979 Fords... So I did some research on the web and traced the kit back to its maker... Kwik Wire... Turns out quick wire is a mom and pop company about 30 minutes from my house. I called today and had a brief talk with them... They were heading out for the weekend... I won't be doing anything until I find out what they all offer... It sounded like "Pops" will do the wiring for a fee of course. I will keep you informed on what I do but as of right now I am going with the kwik wire kit.
