If you go to a really good parts store they can look in the back of their catalogue and find you a manually operated heater control valve where you can run your own cable. Plenty of older model cars used that style from the factory.

BUT if you do put a valve in, then yes, you need some form of bypass before it for the coolant to keep flowing when the valve is closed, or all you are doing is shutting the entire cooling system off because it won't be able to flow through the radiator to cool, it will be stopped at the valve, probably messing up quite a few things, and eventually overheating.

There is no harm in stopping the flow of water to the heater core and it certainlly will not stop the flow to the radiator.

I'm going to look into a manual valve maybe something I can put like a hand choke to it to control it .Thanks
