Recently, I rebuilt my 390 fe. All went well until fire it up time came. Fired right up, but it smoked like crazy. I went through it again. Long story short, I'm 99% sure it's because after I had the machine work done, I did'nt take in to account the difference of angles between the new surfaces and the intake manifold. I also did'nt remove the splash pan in the valley of the block. So....am I on track here? I'm using an Edelbrock aluminum intake...Will I have to get a different one? Appreciate the input...
Does it keep smoking? Maybe you just had some oil in the cylinders or intake that needed to burn off after the rebuild. I wouldn't think the small amount taken off would make the intake gaskets fit any different, they should be thick enough to take up that space.
I had a similar problem years ago on a 428 I rebuilt. It had the wrong intake manifold gaskets. The gasket ports were short. They sealed around the top and sides of the port but along the bottom of the port there was a small gap between the gasket and port, this allowed it to suck oil in from the valley area.
