Gas Cap P/N

Looking for the gas cap P/N for the rear tank on a late 77 f250. It is NOT the same as the saddle tank cap. It is a little taller. Cap is in the fuel door, not exposed.

thanks

Lute

Do you have evaporative emission control? That's the charcoal canister in the engine compartment.
The difference between with and without is if you have the evap system, the fuel cap is non-vented. Without evap the cap is vented.

No evap i believe, unless you are referring to the 'coffee can'. There is no smog pump or other stuff for that.

Thanks

You believe? Do you want the correct fuel cap or not? The fuel caps with Evap/Em do not interchange without Evap/Em.

"Coffee can" is a vacuum reservoir, located on left (drivers) side inner fender apron (if so equipped).

1970/77: Evap/Em steel charcoal cannister is round, mounted on the right (passenger) side inner frame rail, either below the alternator, slightly in front of it, or in front of the engine crossmember.

1978/79: Same possible locations, but the cannister is rectangular and plastic.

Here's what the canister looks like.
Even if the canister has been removed by a PO, the lines going to it along the frame rail would probably still be there.

Are you SURE both caps are the correct ones? The parts catalog doesn't list a different number for the aft and mid tanks.
Here's what the catalog lists:
Cap assy, fuel tank filler
Fits:
77 F150-350 w/o evaporative emissions
non-locking
2 5/8" OD, vented, handle on top of cap, zinc plate finish.
use w/ aft axle and/or midship tank
D7TZ-9030-H replaced by D8TZ-9030-A, Motorcraft FC-931

Perogie Enterprises, Highstown, NJ has 1 of the D7TZ caps (609) 448-5593
These have the D8TZ cap:
Haven Ford, Haven, KS has 1 (620) 465-2252
Tison Motor Co., Estill, SC has 1 (803) 625-2551
Wesley Obsolete Parts, Liberty, KY has 1 (606) 787-5293
Antique Auto Supply, Arlington, TX has 1 (817) 275-2381

What bothers me is OP's "late 1977" jazz (Is it really an early 1978? What is the VIN?) and 'saddle tank' whiz bang.

1977/79 Stylesides have fuel doors, but if mid-ship tank not installed, open fuel door-nothing is there.

But aftermarket fuel tanks could have been installed on the left and right sides, as that's what 'saddle tanks' refers to.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
D8TZ-9030-B (replaced D7TZ-9030-D) .. 'Single' Locking Fuel Cap w/2 keys / Use on Mid-Ship and/or Aft Axle Fuel Tank (Motorcraft FC-805) / Obsolete

Applications: 1977/78 F100/350 without Evaporative Emission.

NOS PARTS LTD in Waxahachie TX has ONE = 972-937-2201.

CARPENTER NOS OBSOLETE PARTS in Concord NC has ONE = 800-476-9653.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
D7TZ-9030-D =

KINSEL L/M in Beaumont TX has ONE = 800-816-2894.

NOS PARTS SOURCE in Olathe KS has ONE = 913-220-5746.

With factory installed mid-ship and aft axle tanks, FoMoCo offered fuel cap kits that contained two caps and 4 common keys.

Thanks for the feedback. This is the same problem I'm having at NAPA/etc. There is only one listed cap.

Last 5 of the VIN are 44164, truck is titled as a 77.
Both tanks were installed and to the best of my knowledge are factory tanks. The mid ship tank's gas cap is the one listed below by Mike.

The aft tank needs a different cap and appears to be a factory installed tank. The diameter is fine but the 'arms' on the cap need to be taller.

Thanks

It sounds like you may have a cap for a tank WITH evap emissions. I don't have the physical data but I know that the locking tabs between the two were different. The cap w/ evap emissons was non-vented, w/o evap was vented.

As I recall, Evap/Em cap is not only non vented, but has 4 narrow prongs, two above, 2 below 180 degrees apart.

Evap/Em: Unleaded fuel, restrictors in filler necks, served two purposes. Lower prongs of cap twisted into restrictors.

Back then, there were two sizes of gas station nozzles. Restrictors designed so larger in diameter leaded gas nozzles wouldn't fit.

But unleaded was more expensive than leaded regular, so some peeps knocked out the restrictors so they could use leaded gas.

Peeps unaware that leaded gas melted the charcoal inside cat converters shoving it into muffler. Vehicles soon sounded like vacuum cleaners headin' on down the road.

Wasn't too long before they died alongside the road, muffler plugged up solid.

OP: Look at aft axle tank adjacent to sending unit for round hole that contains the Evap/Em fuel vapor valve.

Cannister, vapor lines, restrictor may have gone bye bye, but valve may still be present w/nipple capped off.

Truck has filler neck set up for UNleaded. There is no evap hole on the tank.
If yes, what year cap do I order from the knucklehead at NAPA who doesn't know how to do anything but read the computer screen even though they have a rack of books in the back that nobody knows how to read....

Thanks

Not a true restoration, I just want the Pumpkin to look as good as the day it was delivered.
Here's my build thread https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/8...with-pics.html
This is what the canister looked like before I cleaned it up
