Retrofitting a tailgate from a 96 to my 86. Didnt know til i tried to fit it the 2 mounts on a newer one are smaller. T47 torx driver fit the newer model and they came out fairly easy with some pb blaster. The old ones take a T45 torx driver. My luck they were pretty much welded in with rust. Broke 2 driver bits even after a propane torch and pb blaster. Took 3 hours, 2drill bits, and hammer and chisel to get the old mounts off.
But its done. I got a tailgate for my truck. Its not a factory style for my model but i dont care. I just wanted a functional tailgate that wasnt gonna fold in half when my big butt sits on it like the $100 dollar jobs from lmc. I gotta sand and primer it tomorrow after i install my headlights and tail light lenses.
I had the same problem with my JY outside mirror, the mirror I got was on the wrong bracket, the torx bolt was a bear. Luckily a buddy had a 1/2" drive torx bit set, we got it off.
A little late now but, When trying to take the brackets and mounts off, I found that taking the tail lights out and spraying penetrant from the back helps to loosen the bolts.
^^ That's some good information there. The real problem isn't so much the friction on the threads, it's the rust and crud that has built up on the exposed part of the bolt.
And Torx are great for keeping people from stealing your stuff!... Just a royal pain when it comes down to doing maintenance. My whole Jeep was made out of Torx Screws... even the TPS on the throttlebody was Torx'd on (which I had to cut off!).

Yep. I spotted that. I was changing rear lenses and didnt want to risk hitting the old ones with the drill or chisel.
I used pb blaster and a propane torch and even tried a terminal cleaner on the threads. They just wouldnt budge.
