timing question

Helping a neighbor today and a question came up on timing. With fuel pump out we could see that the timing marks on the cam and crank were lined up (across from each other). The question came up as to whether that would be TDC on the compression stroke for #1 cylinder, I had a yes vote, he stated otherwise. Got a beer riding on this....

Generally you would be right, however some cam gears are marked 180 out. #1 piston is still at top (as crank marker points up) but it's on the end of the exhaust stroke vs end of the compression stroke.

So.... declare a tie and share the beer.
