my van has a fairly new problem that if i let off the throttle it'll sometimes stall. until today it was often just when starting up, you hold the pedal down until it fires up, then let off, it would start-stall then start easily. today it got to be a bit more. i left home, let off the throttle halfway down the block, stalled, restarted, and was fine. later in the day, i was in a parking lot, stopped, and if i tapped the throttle and let off sharply, it would stall.
when it doesn't stall, it seems the governor takes a second to catch up with the dropping speed, as it drops to maybe 300 RPM for half a second before recovering to the proper idle speed.
the injection system has about 1500 miles after the rebuild, and filters are ok.
i plan to hit the fuel filter with diesel kleen tonight, is there anything else i should look at to solve this issue? possibly an adjustment?
Ha, same thing happened to the motorhome when I did the IP and injectors on it, shortly after, about the same ~1500 miles.
I was told just to change the fuel filter (or take it off) an fill it up with Fuel conditioner, and re-start engine for 30 seconds, and shut off.
Let it sit overnight, next morning, fire 'er up, let it warm up, and go drive the **** out of it! Drive it like you stole it! Problem went away, and never came back since!
A member on here actually just had that very same problem also, he did what I told 'em to, and he reported back the problem was solved after half an hour of hard driving.
My rebuilder told me that it is a common problem with these pumps since the change to the ULSD, seems the new metering valves have to get a few miles on them before they don't stick and cause stalling. A dose of conditioner or lubricant will help.
i just dumped the filter into the waste oil barrel, sealing the center hole of the filter with my thumb to avoid contamination, filled it up with diesel kleen, fired up, shut down, and now its gonna sit overnight to do its work.
it sure is comforting to know that its a common issue and goes away by itself!
If all else fails, try bumping the rpm a little, you did not say were it is set, you can see if that makes any difference, if you don't already know, the adjustment screw is on the right side ( passenger ) of the pump.
