Rev engine up, let off throttle, engine dies

My truck started doing this last night. While setting in park when I rev up my engine to between 2500 and 3000 rpms and just let off the throttle it dies. It will start right back up and idle just fine. If I ease off the throttle rather than just let off it won't die but I can feel a brief shudder as it falls below 1000 rpms. When I first started it up last night, it didn't want to stay started. I had to hold the key switch in the start position for a few seconds to keep it running. I drove it and it did just fine. But its still dying when I rev it up in park and just let off the throttle quickly.

From recent research I just did on your exact symptoms exhibited by my brother's 7.3, the problem is usually a stuck part inside the injection pump (can't remember what it is called). Sometimes it will free itself (it did for my brother). Others will install a new fuel filter completely filled with a concentrated diesel fuel system cleaner and run that through the engine, with the hope that it unsticks it.

red, the part is the governor.

It's what controls the engine speed throughout the range.

Changed the fuel filter about 3 weeks ago. Injection pump is new, however, I am running off the rear tank which the previous owner said hadn't been used in a couple of years. Some diesel kleen may do the trick.

Sounds like a good plan. I don't like that filter anyway. It's the one piece filter instead of the two piece with the water seperator. It came with the truck when I bought it.

Mine was doing the same thing, I was told to fill a new fuel filter with diesel kleen and start and run for 15-30 seconds then let sit for atleast an hour preferably overnite, then run it hard and after a couple of minutes it should clear up. It worked great on mine, I did also treat the tanks, gave both of them a real good dose to clear help the fuel in there.

One-piece filter? Does it have the water drain on the bottom? If not, there could be water in the filter with no way out. Not a good thing. I have the one-piece filter but mine has a water drain and sensor port on it.
