I just purchased a new 78-79 Grill Shell from Denis Carpenter. When I opened it up I saw a long scratch across the top. Called and talked to their Tec guy. Was told I could send it back and they would replace it. But..... he warned me that all their grill shells would probably have a scratch or dent somewhere on them. That they were service replacements, not show quality. Does this seam right for $550.00? plus UPS. I guess I just do not know what to do. I am looking for some advice.
If I had spent $550 on a grill shell, only to be told that I was guaranteed to get a scratch and dent piece, that tech guy would have gotten an ear full.
There's no way he can speculate that the next one would have the same problem; he's just trying to get you off the phone so he can move on to the next call. Send it back and if the second one does have a problem, it's time to yell very loudly.
That's funny, in their catalog they boast about being from the original tooling, they also boast about their quality.
No, that's NOT an acceptable answer. At $550.00, other than a NIB, NOS grill, it's, I believe the most expensive replacement on the market so it had better be show quality.
If I were looking for a "service replacement" grill, I'd go to e-bay or LMC and get crappy quality at half the cost.
Not only should they replace it but they should 1) visually inspect the replacement before they ship it to you and 2) pick up the return shipping.
Ya, that's BS. I was impressed with my 77 grill when I bought it from them, but I understand sometimes these things happen. I agree, at the price they want for their grills, they better be show quality. Send it back? Will they pay for return shipping? It's not cheap to send something like that back. I've had good luck with their customer service, but the guy you talked to is not giving their company a good name.
At that price you should be garranteeing quality, not crap. Talk to the sales/product manager and let them know about this thread. It may help. Email them to avoid sales rep.
Similiar thing just happened to me with a grille insert from LMC... Fortunately, they didn't request that I send the scratched/cracked one back... I also recently received my grille letters from DC with Made in China stickers on them. They look really nice and I hope they last.
Saying that scratches and dents come from the factory can be expected is beyond CRAP. Those defective parts need to be in a discount line and not be sold at retail of over $550.00.
I bought my DC grill from NPD who was responsible for the shipment and when the driver showed up, he made me open it and inspect it. He wouldn't leave until I did and then I signed a form to show I was satisfied. Otherwise, he'd have to load it back up and ship it back.
Beginning in the mid 1970's, FoMoCo began shipping grilles in see-thru vacuum sealed plastic bags. Some arrived at dealerships with dings, some were bent all to hell.
If the bags were opened, the grilles could not be returned to FoMoCo for credit...so we looked at them very closely before we opened the bags.

How is Carpenter shipping grilles?
Ford must've learned a lesson from the plastic bagged grills. When I bought mine in the mid-90's it came in a heavy cardboard box. It's still in the box. It was opened the first time a few months ago.
