1979 Ford F 150 4x4 400 Auto . O.k. ....I have tail lights and signal lights all working. What could be the issue when I put it in reverse there are no back up lights??? Any help is much appreciated. Thank you
your neutral safety switch is bad... does it start only in park and neutral?or any gear? could just use a cleaning? tried that on mine with no luck . quick ,easy , cheap fix. its located on the driver side of the tranny ,looks like a half moon sort of thing.
With the manual linkage properly adjusted, loosen the two switch attaching bolts.
Place the transmission manual lever in neutral. Rotate the switch and insert the gauge pin (No. 43 drill shank end) into the gauge pin holes of the switch. The gauge pin has to be inserted a full 31 ⁄ 64 inch into the 3 holes of the switch.
Tighten the 2 neutral start switch attaching bolts to 55-75 inch lbs. and remove the gauge pin from the switch.
Check the operation of the switch. The engine should only start in Neutral and Park.
Thanks gentlemen for all the information. I could not see the picture for some reason, but I will figure it out. I will try working on the switch. I did not try starting it in neutral. Thanks again.
Turn the key on and cycle through the gears. Have a helper watch to see if your bu lights come on at any point. If they do, the nss needs adjusting. If they don't, something else is the problem.
Wow!!! Just checked things out and it appears the "outer manual lever" is not connected to anything! It must be missing some sort of linkage rod because it looks likes there is nothing there to connect to. What the heck is missing? Time to find a Haynes reference book.
Thanks for all your replies , and the picture was great.
1978/79: NSS located on transmission. C6 different NSS than C4.

Missing shift linkage: If nothing connected to outermanual control selector lever you aren't going anywhere. Shift rod routes from steering column selector lever, attaches to manual control selector lever, as does NSS
An exploded view from the 1973/79 Ford truck parts catalog is worth 1000 words. Haynes manual isn't worth 2 cents in this situation.
I asked mikeo0o0o0 to post this: Illustration Section A70.2 - Page 3 (upper pic) / 1973/79 F100/350 C6 Shift Linkage / 7A256 > manual control selector lever, 7D261 > downshift (kickdown) lever, pokes thru hole in 7A256.
