I wanted to share my experience with you guys for anyone that may have similar problem.
I put 3-4000 miles on the truck since I last filled the DEF tank and while I changed the oil yesterday I noticed it said under 1/2 full. I got a 2.5 gallon jug of DEF and went to put it in and one drop wouldn't even go in it was filled to the filler neck. I took it to the dealer and asked for some help and the tech plugged in the computer and reset the gauge to read level OK. I know my truck goes through roughly 1 gallon of DEF every 1000 miles or so and I started thinking more and more about it. This morning I crawled under the truck and squeezed the filler hose and you could hear it dropping fluid into the tank which did not sound full. I knocked on the side of the tank and a little more fluid came dripping in. Finally I smacked the very bottom of the tank and hear a woosh of the fluid from the filler neck go into the tank. I then was able to put the entire 2.5 gallon jug in to fill it completely.
I just wanted to share this with you guys to avoid not having to go to the dealership if you encounter the same thing. If it wont take any DEF smack it around a little bit
Is it possible you were trying to fill it when it was partially frozen and the tank heater was thawing it and the smacking of it "broke the slush" free?
I'm not sure it would crystalize that much unless you didn't drive the truck for awhile after filling.
I have filled DEF to where it's in the filler neck before and it wasn't an issue (summer months).
No idea either.
I've experienced vapor lock several times. I don't think the venting on the fill hose works very well. This situation the OP describes does not surprise me at all, I've seen it happen too but I have never had to whack it.
Funny you mentioned vandalism marchare011 because that was my first thought as well. I pushed a 3-4 ft piece of wire down the fill neck with no obstructions.
But ruschejj may be onto something with the venting though. Last month when I filled it I forced the rest of the jug in so I wouldn't have to carry it around in the bed of the truck anymore.
You're right, ventilation isn't very good.
The last gallon doesn't go in there all at once, you have to pause a number of times and hear it gurgle into the tank.
I just read this post.... I went to fill DEF tonight and none will go in... The message centre said my tank was at less than 1/2 full. But I can't get a single drop in there. ?????
Oh ya.... **** forgot to take off that bright blue cap !!!!
no but seriously.......I got it to go in now.... and got 2.5 gals in there. Still have the same message on the display saying its less than 1/2 full though. Don't know why it wouldn't go in the first time.. ?? Just bubbled out as soon as I started to pour.
