I'm putting a new cam in my 78 bronco it has a 400 in it. I was wondering which would be better between comp cam or lunati? I'm goin to change the lifters and valve springs. I'm also going to put a new intake, 4bbl carb and headers on it. I don't want to put new heads or anything like that on it though
First off what do you want out of the engine, horsepower or torque? Do you have a manual or automatic transmission? Will the vehicle be used for racing or as a daily driver? 2wd or 4wd? You need to answer these questions first. Most any cam manufacturer will provide assistance in selecting the best cam for your engine based on the answers to the previous questions. The answer to these questions will also allow you to select the correct intake, carburetor and headers. If you can't answer these questions don't expect to be happy with the outcome no matter who makes your cam.
Well I want a good amount of both horsepower and torque. I'm not really planning on pulling anything heavy with it. It's a 4x4 manual. Im not going to race it. I want to be able to get on the highway and burn the tires of and still be able to go through a mud hole
Then your going to want something the comes in down low. Lunati and Comp are both good brands. Look for something in the 260ish duration and 112 LSA to bring in some down low grunt. Probably looking at an off idle to 4,500 power band with that. Can't really spin these motors up in stock form. Don't forget a straight up timing set because of the factory 8 degree retard. You don't want a super large cam in theses engines or anything like a 108 LSA reason being it's a Toqrue engine.
Also to answer your question you want torque. Not horsepower. Horsepower doesn't even come into effect until 5,252 rpm. And you'll never hit that because you'll float the valves unless you do some serious work on the heads for valve train stablity.
Look at comps Xtreme 4x4 series of cams for these engines. For 400 bucks you get the cam, lifters, springs, retainers, seals, gaskets, timing chain, intake gaskets, basically everything you need.
I've read a lot of good things about the 268H from comp. The 260 would be a good choice as well. I was actually suggested the 260 myself from comp but after talking to some of the top FE engine builders I'm going to go a bit bigger with a comp 270 because my tranny and gearing allow for it. Just make sure you get the complete kit (K-kit)
I'm thinking about going with the comp cam xtreme energy with an advertised duration of 262/270. It says its from 1500 to 5500 rpm. How wud the throttle response be on that? I'm probly going to get the kit from summit racing. It says gaskets don't come with it. Its got a new timing chain but it says its a double non-roller do I want a roller one? Does anybody know how the idle would be on that?
It will depend on what you end up running for carb and exhaust also with that. Should have a decent throttle response. Nothing that's like instant as a short stroke engine would have but I would say snappy. See if you can get the K Kit takes alot of guess work of figuring out coil bind, open and seat loads install height and such. Just get a basic 30 dollar 3 key way cloyes timing set set at straight up.
