I am helping a friend who has a 2000 F150 with a 5.4L engine that sat for 18 months.I have read a number of the threads and they gave me a place to start. I have done the following:
- drained the old gas and added gas with a fuel injector cleaner additive
- checked the fuel pump and I heard it start
- replaced fuel filter - started the engine with starting fluid and it ran a few seconds and stopped. I did this numerous times and it would run a little longer but would not idle - checked the fuel pressure at the fuel rail and the gauge never moved from zero
So, a few questions. When the fuel pump stops the initial "pressure stage" when the key is turned one "notch", I hear a "thump" from the engine compartment. Is that normal? If the pump starts, does that remove concern about the relay switch? Can thee pump "run" without actually pumping gas? Is replacing the fuel pump the next step?
First thing; do not use starting fluid.
You risk blowing the intake hardware apart from backfire.. It has already happened.
If you see no fuel pressure build from mutiple key on cycles and hear the pump run each time the tank has to come down for fuel pump service.
Once cranking begins, the fuel pump is turned on full time.
I would not have put injector cleaner in until the motor was running.
It is a cleaner to be used in a very low ratio over a time period and not meant for good combustion.
What you did was degrade starting under these conditions by adding the cleaner.
If the pump can't pump, it does no good.
Good luck.
Thanks Reb Colonel and Bluegrass. I guess the next step is to pull the fuel pump and check the screen, but I will probably go ahead and replace it since I will have the current pump out. I will remove the gas and add strait gas as well.
