6.9 Pump Advice Needed

I have an '87 F250 and I need some advice on whether the problems I am having is injection pump related, and if so can I repair the pump myself.

I have owned the truck for 4 years and have only put about 1000 miles on it. When you go to start it up, it fires right up and then dies. Then you have to hold the accelerator on the floor, like its flooded, and hope it starts. Chances are about 50/50. It won't re-start when its hot so I never shut it off. Once running the engine never dies. The first 2 years the engine didn't smoke any, then all of the sudden it started smoking ALOT. Blinding smoke trail behind you for a few miles, then smokes less. It smells like oil, because of several oil leaks and the limited driving I can't really tell how much oil its burning. The smoke is white.
Last Spring I installed new glow plugs and lift pump to see if that helped the starting. It seemed to help for about 2 weeks, then back to normal.

I had heard some guys at the local salvage yard mention that the injector pumps on these trucks were somewhat unreliable? Obviously I don't know, which is why I am asking you guys.

Do you think the pump could be flooding causing some of the problems and the raw fuel contributing to the smoke?

If yes, are there any websites / links that can provide me helpful info on the R&R of the pump? Precautions to take so I get it timed back right on the re-install? The old truck isn't even worth the repair bill to take it somewhere, but I teach Ag., and if I could bring it in and let the kids help work on it, maybe me and them can learn a little and get the old truck more dependable.

I stopped using it about 6 months ago because I couldn't depend on it starting every morning.

Thanks in advance for your time and efforts in replying to this post.

Unfortunately the IPs should be rebuilt by pro's they have the know how and machinery.

Your truck may have several problems, the start and dies is a symptom of air in the fuel system and fuel drain off. IE you have just enough in the IP bowl to start then it dies of starvation. You then re prime the system while cranking....probably with NO GPs, unless you turn the truck key off and back on each attempt (20 seconds).

The GPs you put in are probably already burnt out if your controller is iffy, what brand did you use. Test them with a test light, clip to 12v + power and test point to the GP spade tip (wire disconnected, if it lights it's good. Only use Beru/Motorcraft GPs and think about a push button on the GP controller, get how to info later.

The smoking could be a result of several things, air in the system as you may have dislodged a return line/oring cap on the injectors, plugged fuel filter, bad fuel (from sitting/biomatter).

The no start hot is a symptom of the IP being worn out, how old is it.
