I'm not a first time Ford owner, but I am a first time Super Duty owner, or I will be by this time tomorrow. My current truck hs an aftermarket rear view camera on it and it's OK, but not great. One of the things I'm considering is installing the Ford OEM rear view camera and I have some questions regarding what I need to get. MY understanding is that the XLT Interior package has a rear view mirror that is ready to accept and display video. That makes me think that the camera kit from Ford is going to contain the tailgate handle assembly and the wiring needed to run along the chassis, up into the overhead console, or some similar route and plug into the rear view mirror, My dealer wants $374 for the kit, which is less than I paid for the Rostra camera that's in my Tundra. At that price, I'm assuming that it doesn't include a monitor and that it uses the existing mirror for the display. Am I correct in all of this or am I missing something?
What year is the truck you're buying? The easiest way to go would be aftermarket radio for sure. You can also use a Ford camera with the aftermarket radio.
What did you do for a video display for the camera?
Not sure I understand the question.
My camera is plug-n-play with my pioneer radio. When in reverse the camera is viewed on the radio screen. When in drive it changes back to the radio.
Hope that helps.
Are you keeping the Pioneer radio to install it in your new truck?? If so, that would be the video display he's referring to. I can almost guarantee Ford does not sell what you're looking for in a "kit" per say. You'll need to purchase everything separately, last time I did one with a factory camera, cost was close to $500.
I don't have a Pioneer radio. That's someone else's post. I just have the factory radio. I don't plan on putting a high dollar system in this truck because the last one i had in a tundra got ripped off in front of my house.
I checked and I know Rostra makes a tailgate camera kit for the 250, but I'm not sure about the display. I'm thinking that maybe they also have a mirror that replaced the factory mirror and I woudn't have a problem with that as long as the factory mirror doesn't have a lot of electronics in it. Man, hey just don't make things simple anymore.

Gotcha,
Nothing is easy, but it's not impossible either.
If you don't wanna go with an aftermarket radio, there are plenty of aftermarket mirror/camera setups out there. I personally have no experience with any mirror displays. If you're familiar with the Rostra, I'd go with that. Is there a compass or something else attached to the mirror of the truck you're buying?
The mirror/camera I looked at before purchasing my pioneer had a compass and temp and the display for camera was so tiny that, to me, was just not worth the $$$.

Don't know about the mirror, I'm picking the truck up today, but I didn't get a lot of whistles and bells, so it may well be a plain jane setup. The Rostra that I had in the Tundra came with a screen and a bezel that replaced a part of the overhead console, and maybe that's what it would be fir the Ford. I'l just have to check it out. I've got so much going on with getting this truck deal going, my head is spinning.
on my truck i have an aftermarket camera and Pioneer in dash unit to view the camera and that is ideal to me. IF the truck doesnt come with the in dash video unit then i would find a way to get a 3-4" aftermarket viewing unit. The rearview mirrors that have the camera are so small that it seems useless to me. its like a 2" display trying to back up to a trailer or something is not as easy on a 2" screen as it is on a bigger screen. And i have experience with both styles and my personal preference is the aftermarket camera and the in dash touch screen for viewing.
