I have late 99 f350 with 246k. I have a date on April 3rd with BTS for a transmission. Should I get bellowed up pipes and twist is arm to install those while transmission is being swapped? Just had back surgery so I can't crawl around under a truck for a month or so.
Welcome to the club - I would do the ups if you can with your mileage- Much easier to get to with trans out from what I read. Mine are still good so havent had to replace yet, but mine is just over 100k miles. Good Luck
I agree with calling...he is a "TRUCK SHOP" and does all sorts of work, but it just depends on what his daily schedule is as to whether or not his guys can do that too. Hopefully they can be quickly throwing the up pipes on while Brian is building your new tranny.
Many have opined that the ceramic coating is not worthwhile unless going high horsepower on your truck. You can buy exhaust wrap and high temp paint for $20 if your truck is a DD and won't be raced or dynoed.
I bought the VHT high temp flame proof paint for my up pipes. I will do a thread once I am done.
having a van made me want the coating cause things tend to get hotter cause of the dog house and what not. so I figured $20 in paint was worth the effort. should have them painted this week and install soon after.
I will report as I drive them a bit to see how the paint holds up
I got the same VHT paint MTDewX. I should be getting to mine soon as well. Did you get the wraps as well? I'm thinking of wrapping them after I install them. Also gonna paint the turbo exhaust housing and outlet with the VHT paint.
Definitely call and see if they can do it while the tranny is out. Without the transmission there it makes the job much easier. I had to torch 2 of the bolts off and there is no way I would have been able to hold a punch and swing a hammer with the transmission in there. Here are some pics of removing mine https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...on-is-out.html
I don't plan extreme horsepower but I do pull a 28ft aluminum livestock trailer quite a bit and I just want to be able pull the hills a little better. Been running a TS chip I bought from Bob Riley but going with Brian's tunes when he does the tranny. Excited to see if he wakes the old girl up a little more. I'm not sure if pipes are even leaking but with 246k I just thought with transmission out it would sure be a good time to upgrade.
Your transmission will shift like a dream after Brian gets through with it and tunes the truck. You can leave black marks right on top of the ones I left when I was there! Brian does good work, think you'll be happy.
Look for the black soot behind the turbo on the up pipes and if you can get your truck on a lift it'll be that much easier to see underneath. All you really need is a flashlight to check. Google image search "7.3 exhaust leak" and you'll find plenty of descriptive pictures of leaks, like this:

Looking on Riffraff's installation instruction of the up pipes it's recommended to spray some rust buster fluid on the bolts well in advance of trying to remove them. At DI Performance yesterday the mechanics sprayed mine heavily with PB Blaster and asked that I do it repeatedly and faithfully every day until I bring her in to have the up pipes done this weekend.
