I never realized that my degas bottle was as dirty until I saw Tugly's clean one.
Has some black stuff in the area above the full mark but is not gritty, just slippery. Had an oil cooler leak which has been fixed and total flush, new hoses, thermostat & housing, filled with CAT ELC. Discovered yesterday that my coolant level was very low - over a gallon. Had to top off a couple of times when flush was done but haven't really checked it since then. don't drive it much.
Coolant is clean, no apparent leaks, no steam or white smoke of any kind, no milkshake and engine runs great. Hope that the black stuff was from before oil cooler repair but don't know where the coolant went. Maybe it is just finally "Burped" full as I did not initially get the full four gallons of distilled water in at flush.
If it is not leaking or going out the tail pipe or in the crank case where else can it go??

It sure sounds like a burb to me (first true T-stat opening), and nasty stuff will come out of their little caves to foul the bottle. That may be what happened to me yesterday.
