For the last year or so, I have been gathering up information for when I get the money to do a Cummins swap. I have another question.
In my '93 Dodge that will be the donor, I have a Dana 61 and Dana 71 with 3.07 gears. I really like the 24 + MPG compared to the old 21 when I had the 3.55's.
When I do the swap, I would like to retain the 3.07 ears. From what I have read, The only way to do that is to use the Dana 61 front. The only problem is the passenger's side spring perch. It is made for 2.5" springs. Can it be made to work with 3" springs?
The only other option that I would love to do, is run 4.10's and a Gear Vendor overdrive. That costs a lot of money though.
Why not just keep the factory Dana 44 and regear to 3.07s?
A Dana 60 will support the Cummins and handle the torque better. That, and I have never changed a set of ball joints in my life and would like to keep it that way.
X2 on the 44 front end. Cummins 5.9 is 900 lbs, ford 460 is 655 lbs. Remember that a cummins might vary depending on equipment too, like belt accessories and vacuum pumps. Weight can be shaved with frame mounted fuel systems, electric vacuum pumps, etc.

I've read that the first 12 valves weighed 1100 LBS. The Dana 60 was also offered with a 300 six. I despise ball joints. I'm thinking the 2.5" wide springs will work.
