Transmission question

About a month ago I stopped by a friends house and parked in his fairly steep driveway, I was just stopping for a second so I left it running with my wife in the passenger seat, well when I came back out my wife was in the drivers seat and she was white as a ghost, so I asked her what was wrong she said the truck just jumped and started rolling down the driveway. Well the driveway was icy so I just figured it was sliding on the ice. So today I stopped by my friends house and parked at the top of the driveway ( not icy this time ) and when I came back out my truck was sitting at the bottom of the driveway. I have had not problems with the transmission shifting or slipping or anything for that matter, so I was just wondering if anyone has experienced this and if so is this a sign of things to come or is it something I can live with as the transmission functions normally other than it apparently coming out of park momentarily when parked on a hill?

Was the gearshift lever NOT in PARK when you got back in the truck? Did you set the emerg brake before you left it parked and running? That little parking pawl on the flywheel is just a little piece of metal and if the driveway was pretty steep, it's gonna roll! Oh yeah, you may NOT have a parking pawl in the tranny anymore.

I'd say you just found out what the parking brake is for... parking on hills! Always set the brake before you let the truck settle on the transmission pawl. or it can jam or break.

I have never used a park brake on any of my vehicles that are equipped with an automatic transmission and this is the first time I have seen this in the 27 years ive been driving. Not saying that using the park brake is a bad thing just that ive never done it. I have used it on my vehicles that have a manual transmission. And yes it was still in park when I got to it.
I drove it back up the driveway and put it back in park and it held just fine just like when I parked it the first time, that is to say it held at least long enough for me to get in the house the first time.

Did you ever notice how hard it is to move the shift level out of park on the automatic trans. when you park any auto trans on an incline?
Best thing is to put the vehicle in neutral, just like the manual trans one, put the parking brake on and make sure the parking brake grab before put it in park. That way you know the brake is holding the vehicle not the "pawl" of the auto trans holding the vehicle.

it was a drivers test failure if you didn't set the parking brake in a vehicle when I was in the military (I was artillery, but my main deal was driving, and driver instructor, oh those 40 years ago). Not that I use it often, but it's there for a reason, and emergency brake ain't the only reason.

not setting parking brake and aslo sounds like the shift linkage is out of adjustment. Long time agao ford cars had a bullitian about this same concern.

Is the shift lever sloppy? Not as precise as it was new? If so there are two Torx head screws near the floor that attach the shift tube to the column. They are known to come loose. When this happens the lever gets sloppy and it won't fully engage park.

If that is not your problem you probably have a damaged park pawl inside the trans. It is not that hard to fix if it isn't a 4x4. If it is, then the transfer case has to come off to get to the park pawl.

Bingo^^^

Thats how I park Mine

Set the E-Brake Make it Hold the Truck First then put in Park

Iv only had 1 Jam from all the pressure and just about was stuck in park

I would NEVER want to that much pressure the Whole weight of the truck About 4TON PLUS whatever pressure it picks up Due to the Fact it was sitting on an Incline Driveway on the Parking Pawl

Thats a Huge amount of pressure for a 1/2inch (and I am probably giving it some as its really only 3/8 I would guess) Round Pawl to hold

Sounds like your Pawl is Broken if the truck can Roll Away Not Good

Here is a 4R100 park pawl and park gear. This is looking into the rear of the trans with the extension housing removed.

So it isnt a Round Dowel Type

I just assumed it was like the Little Cars My Bad

Another thought was if you could check the Trans range sensor see where you are at if it did need adjustment

You guys rock, thank you for all of your replies and pictures to boot. Im thinking it may be the shift linkage may be out of adjustment as it still holds the truck in park.
