"... installing a a points style distributor..." The conversion kit is for a points dizzy. Using a points dizzy and converting it to electronic is redundant. Just obtain a DS2 single vacuum advance dizzy and ignition box (with a blue grommet) '83 or older or use a 4-pin GM HEI module (I suspect the conversion kit is an HEI based item) and you are good to go.

ok- so just to recap the options for the OP:

1. points conversion
buy points dizzy, electronic conversion module

2. DSII conversion
buy DSII dizzy, DSII module

3. DSII/HEI conversion
buy DSII dizzy, HEI module

#1 is the most expensive, and you can't easily get replacement parts.
#2 and #3 cost about the same.

all 3 will handle a full 12v if you source the right coil.

between #2 and #3, the HEI probably means less wiring...but #2 has the ignition retard feature.

Am i correct?
use full 12V with a 3 ohm coil
use 1.1-1.5 ohm ballast resistor with a 1.5 ohm coil
Thanks to all...jack

not really...and i'm not an electrical engineer, so i'm not going to get too deep there.

just buy a coil that can handle 12v.
for instance- the MSD page says this about their Blaster coil, which is 0.7ohms:
Most late model vehicles with electronic ignitions do not require a ballast resistor, check your ignition and manufacturers specifications to determine if a ballast is required in your application.

You'll be a long way from stock, so just figure out what your components can handle.

So- because (unlike points) the Pertronix/HEI/Duraspark module can all handle 12v- there'd be no need for a ballast resistor in this setting.

MSD Blaster coil, stock TFI coil, Accel coil...all would be good choices. Basically, anything other than a stock points-style coil.

true, if you wanna pay $400 for the same thing that i listed as "option 3"

if you're going to spend that kind of money, at least go multiple-spark.
