It is a diesel run heater that heats up and circulates your coolant. It is the only way to go if you live in cold climates. Burns about cup of fuel for 1hr cylce. At -30-4 0C I can get in and have full temp on engine before start up.
Best thing for your engine for cold weather
Did this problem with your alternator start after you recently installed an additional/aftermarket device to your truck?
Do you have a Battery isolator installed?
What is the condition of your top mounted two wire alternator connector? If it is loose/warn, has broken pins or wire braids it may cause high resistance which will burn up your internal voltage regulator. (half needle on your amp gauge)

Hard to say, as I have been installing all the upgrades in my sig over the last 6-8 mths,
Not sure what a battery isolator is?
The wires look could as far as I can tell, nice and tight
It is really pissing me off though and running out of cash right now as I got laid offf couple weeks ago
Like the rest, I think you're on the edge with a stock alt. But you can try this. run an 8 guage wire from the output of the alt to the positive terminal on the batt. then run an 8 guage wire from the alt case to the negative batt terminal. this will help eliminate any high resistance in the wiring.
I don't run any loads like you do, but I was dropping a new alt in every 8-10 months there for a while. I did the wire upgrade, and I haven't lost one since
if it does go again, this is what I'll upgrade to: https://www.dcpowerinc.com/fit/2002~...6-190-oem.html
