2 days of running, now another problem. Today I noticed a smell--thought maybe the alternator belt was rubbing a little, as it has started to squeal a little when I rev the engine. Well, about 3 long miles from home (had to walk back) it died. No lights, nothing. Got the other truck and hooked the jumper cables up--no lights--rubbed the cables together on the down truck--battery is hot. Fumbled around and found a small wire with a fuseable link burned off from the connector on the side of the soelenoid that the positive cable and a couple of other small wires attatch to. Twisted it together--started smoking, but got it cranked and got it home--spliced new wire in where the other wire got brittle from the heat. The alternator is smoking, so I'm wondering if the voltage regulator may be hung up putting out too much and burning that small wire---or maybe another problem. The alternator doesn't sound rough, but smokes after it runs a little while.
They make a replacement alternator that bolts come out of the regulator. You must cut off the connector to the regulator and crimp on the connectors. It works great. Been on my truck for 2 years now. My buddys truck 2.5 years. If you need to replace your alternator I highly recommend this, if it needs to be changed. Higher rated amp alternator can be had cheap.
It's a retrofit for the flamin ford 2gs
I've havent installed too many of these cause the customer usually goes for the 3g upgrade.
But the retrofit is a replacement rectifier assybly that instead of putting the power through 2 splade terminals it puts the amps through a stud like most other alternaters.

woke up at 1am thinkin about this the alternator didnt cause the wire burn burned at the solenoid post half way down to fusible link must have been caused when fuel pump shut down and we cranked on it for awhile and it got too hot
