I have an opportunity to pick up a new DBelectrical 220A alternator for a bargain. My old alternator isn't in need of replacement though. Is this the sort of thing that is good to have around? What disadvantages are there to running a high output alternator?
Also, is the FVP on the scangauge supposed to be a good representation of charging voltage?
thats a good name in ho alternators, so if you can afford to put it on the shelf for now do it. If you install high amp draw equipment like winches, inverters that alternator would help with the load. You should upgrade your charging lead if you were to use/buy it.
I had my alternator tested today and it failed the test twice so after looking around I found a new Bosch 180 amp but I see that the cables should to be changed to 2g. I'm not sure that I want to upgrade my cables right now so my question is: at what point/amp do you have to upgrade your battery cables 140, 160?
You can get a Ford 140A alternator to replace the original - no need for wiring upgrade on it (per Ford). General rulewould be - above 150A, then I would increase the wire size (or add another line).
I replaced my stock alternator with a 140 amp db 2 years ago without any problems. He wasn't asking about brands just if he should buy it at the right price.
