Hey guys hate to beat a dead horse but I have a 2001 f150 4x4 with the 4.6 Triton motor, the front axle is not pulling in when I switch the selector on the dash, I know the transfer case is switching so that part is ok. I know there are 2 solenoids on the fire wall, my question is which one is which ? every store I call says one has the nub at 9 oclock and one at 6 oclock which one of these does the front axle, dont want to order the wrong one ? I checked the vacuum and the blue line going to the axle always has vacuum and as I read the diagram the blue line is 2 wd and the red line is 4 wd so is the 2wd solenoid stuck and preventing the 4wd one from pulling in or is the 4wd one bad ???? so many questions so little beer !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You need to know how the system operates more than what solenoid is what so troubleshootng can be done.
Starting from the transfer case motor in the first position, it signals one solenoid to transfer vacuum to the oppisite side of the actuator so it pulls in the axle coupling.
When turning back to 2H it reverse that action.
.
Put in 4H and get under to see if the actuator has operated, first.
If not then is it stuck faulty frozen or has the solenoid not operated.
From this point, do more to try to find out what is faulty instead of buying parts and hopeing.
In 4L the tranfer case motor goes the it's second position , turns a rod in the case to engage a different drive line link.
The solenoids on the fire wall are; outer for Low and inner for High range.
The only other thing that happens in 4L is the case motor circuit board signals the computer to change transmission shift sked to a lower rpm for each gear entered and exitied.
Also 4L has safety interlocks to prevent going into 4L while moving.
All control goes through the GEM modual.
Good luck.
Thanks Bluegrass, the transfer case part works fine it is definatly locking in and even goes into low without question. I have been under it and the actuator on the front axle is not moving at all. When you move the selector I can hear the other actuators click or move the front one does nothing so pretty sure it the solenoid just dont know which one to order the 9 oclock model or the 6 oclock model so I can order one.
You may not need a switch. Have you checked to make sure there is not a vacuum leak between the solenoid and the actuator? I had a broken line on the disengage side. When you switch it just won"t move it. You may need help to check it. I disconnected the lines at the solenoids and had my son put his finger over it while I blew through each one from under the truck. Went to a junkyard and scavenged almost the whole vacuum system and saved what I didn't use for next time.
