ok, so ive been trying to figure out this problem but none of the threads even hint to what my issue is. when i turn the 4wd switch on all i hear is a click. i've been through all the vac lines( no issue there) everything worked just fine the last time i used it. now it just clicks. hope i can get some insight into where to look. ps, no lights come on either.
first thing that happens is the transfer case shifts to LO or HI... does that happen ? Even if you don't engage the front axle, there should be a gear reduction if the transfer case shifted .... no light normally means no shift.
If you don't go into LO when you shift, then I would check the motor / electrical plug / wires on the side of the transfer case. Pull the motor, set on a block, and then shift to see if it moves.
Brian, there is a whole series of actions that take place your not awhere of.
The dash switch is the signal to a control module to initiate an action.
The module controls the case motor that engages the trans and front drive shaft.
Then a solenoid on the firewall routes vacuum to the front axle actuator pulling a sleeve that locks the front axle, then the lamp on the dash lights.
The click you heard is a relay that is trying to operate the case motor.
You need to find where the operation stops in that progression.
Vacuum only plays a part operating the front actuator either in or out.
Try to look at the case motor for an operation fault of some sort.
Good luck.
