ZF removal
My plan was to detach the driveshaft, hydro lines, and pull the shift lever out, then remove the cross member and support it with a jack, unbolt it from the engine, slide it back, then pull it out from underneath.
Does that sound like a solid plan? I don't have any experience really in this department of transmission removal.
I don't have a trans jack, so I suppose I could rent one, or go from up top with a engine hoist like Alvin in AZ did? Or are there any other ways to go about it?
Lastly, any quirks I should be aware of?
Much Appreciated

Actually, since you have a diesel, you can just unbolt the slave cylinder from the bellhousing so you don't have to bleed it out afterwards. Pull the clutch fork then proceed as planned. Good luck!
PS: Make sure not to push the clutch pedal while the tranny is out. I can tell you from experience it won't end well...
Transmission Jack - 450 Lb. Capacity
look in the sales fliers, and i bet you cam pick this one up for under $50
i have had the same one for 8 years, and use it all the time.
it is well worth the price.

Maybe even pick up a used one from Craig's list?
Do the autoparts stores rent those out? :)
For me, it depends on whether you want to take out the seat and carpet.
I -want- to, it's my chance to do other stuff while I'm at it, see? :) YMMV

Either way it's a straight forward process, things like twisted off bolts and
parts that don't fit and things like that, aren't part of transmission work in
my experience.

Just reading where it sounds like about half the guys that change out a
water pump on a 351w twist a bolt off or two, one guy twisted off three.
(3 out of 3 ...I hadn't twisted off any;)
