ZF removal

I'm going to be pulling the ZF s5 out of my 87 idi in the next few days to do some work on it, and I'd appreciate a few pointers if possible. I've only pulled two other transmission since I started working on vehicles, one was a C6 out of my 79 that I pulled in conjunction with the engine, straight out the front, and a T18 sans clutch housing out of a 78 that already had the engine out.

My plan was to detach the driveshaft, hydro lines, and pull the shift lever out, then remove the cross member and support it with a jack, unbolt it from the engine, slide it back, then pull it out from underneath.

Does that sound like a solid plan? I don't have any experience really in this department of transmission removal.

I don't have a trans jack, so I suppose I could rent one, or go from up top with a engine hoist like Alvin in AZ did? Or are there any other ways to go about it?

Lastly, any quirks I should be aware of?

Much Appreciated
Jameson

Solid plan, but a decent floor jack with a tranny adaptor will work wonders. Usually you can get these at NAPA, AutoZone, etc. Otherwise yes sounds good!

Actually, since you have a diesel, you can just unbolt the slave cylinder from the bellhousing so you don't have to bleed it out afterwards. Pull the clutch fork then proceed as planned. Good luck!

PS: Make sure not to push the clutch pedal while the tranny is out. I can tell you from experience it won't end well...

you can buy a trans jack from harbor freight for under $80. it is well worth the price.

i have had the same one for 8 years, and use it all the time.

Wow that sounds cheap enough! :)
Maybe even pick up a used one from Craig's list?
Do the autoparts stores rent those out? :)

For me, it depends on whether you want to take out the seat and carpet.
I -want- to, it's my chance to do other stuff while I'm at it, see? :) YMMV

Either way it's a straight forward process, things like twisted off bolts and
parts that don't fit and things like that, aren't part of transmission work in
my experience.

---------------------

Just reading where it sounds like about half the guys that change out a
water pump on a 351w twist a bolt off or two, one guy twisted off three.
(3 out of 3 ...I hadn't twisted off any;)
