They are integral to the cluster I believe. Mine went out in the 75', and I pulled the cluster from the 79' parts truck. I did not see a clear way to get it apart and out.
It's probably the sender. Pull the wire off the post of the fuel sending unit at the tank. Ground that wire to a known good ground. If the gauge goes to full then the sender is bad.
The fuel gauge itself can be removed from another gauge cluster easily enough but they, at least mine, rarely go bad.
There are four possibilities. In mid-77 they switched from a red to an orange pointer and each comes in either leaded or unleaded fuel.
Let me know whether your gauge says "FUEL" or "UNLEADED" and whether the trucks serial number is before or after s/n O80,001. The s/n is the last 6 digits of your VIN.
