I appreciate all the help, guys, it's all been really helpful. Compression seems good, #4 is at 90,the rest are 100 to 110. The radiator explosion broke the distributor cap off, so immediately shut down (on the way home from buying the truck ).

68cabby, My dad was in the auto repair business from the late 40s and that is where I spent my off days from school, we had a radiator man who rented a smaller shop from us and I must admit I have never seen a radiator blow up like that. It must have really rotted out to not blow a hose . Hope your engine is repairable. Good luck, Kenny
I've never seen one like that either. But that looks to be a big explosion..somebody had mentioned a possible head gasket leak coulda been leaking exhaust gases to the rad? Not sure if that could happen but dang..

Front of valve train had no oil, and nearest the thermostat. No relief at cap probably was tasked with a burst of steam when old thermostat let loose. Hoses weaker than radiator sent the expansion in LPOR.. And how.
