if you have a low compression (8:1 - 8.5:1) 390, install 360 rods. Probably not the best way to do things, but it works good.
Low compression 390s use the 410 piston. CH 1.678".
360 rod = 6.540 approx
So: 1.892 + 6.540 + 1.678 = 10.110
10.17 - 10.110 = .060
So your piston will still be down the hole .060 on a weaker rod.
This is a partial "solution" if you have all those parts but have no access to any other parts.
It does, however, take an 8.2 CR to 8.97 based on a calculator I used along with the standard info for a 390 with those pistons.
The better solution, since you have the engine pretty much all the way apart to make the above switch, is to keep your 390 rods and put in 360 spec pistons. (1960s 390 2bbl "Regular Fuel" spec pistons)

Yeah, my brother and I were rebuilding a 390 on the cheap and wanted more power. We had the stock pistons, a good bore, and a good set of 360 rods. Why not? It never turns over 4K and the longer rod technically gives us more torque over the same compression motor with short rods.
