Fuel issue?

My 89 F250 7.5L acts like it is running out of fuel. I drove to my farm (20 minutes) and the truck ran great. Got down a bumpy road and the truck acted like it was running out of gas. I pressed the gas pedal, and it tried to catch, but eventually died. Tried to start it, and nothing. Sat for 3-5 minutes, and then it started, but still hesitated like it was short on fuel.

I got to my farm house and put in 10 gallons of gas (thought it was out). Started up and drove out of the property to the main road (3 miles or so). All of the sudded, it died again. Sat for 5 minutes or so (messed with the tank selector switch), and the truck fired up again. Another 3 miles, the truck died again. Sat 5 minutes again (rocked the tank selector switch a few times) and the thing fired up and got me ten miles home.

I have replaced the Ignition Control Mod, temp sensor, distributor. I just replaced fuel filters after all of this, but have not driven it. Is it a fuel pump? Help

Check to see what your pressure to your fuel rail is. Should prime to about 30-45. Psi

I will. It just seems if the fuel pump is working, then it is working. Does it work, then slack off? Not that familiar with electric fuel pumps

When the key cycles, you should hear it prime for about 2 seconds. Then when running you can hear them running if your next to the tank. When was the last time the fuel filter was changed?

I just replaced them. There were two on there and they are different. The 3/8 filter allows flow toward the engine and the 5/16 filter was installed flowing toward the tank. Only the front tank works. Not sure if this is a stock set-up or not.

According to my factory manual (1991 FSM), the 460 has only one fuel filter. Are both of these filters on the same line? Your 89 may be different though, and maybe someone with an 89 460 will chime in. I would guess that someone may have modified that though, because AFAIK, the major fuel system change came in 88ish? (not positive).

Yes, the fuel pump can run and be sandbagging at the same time. I would do just what Puddy says. Listen for the pump prime and check the pressure at the fuel rail. I would check the other tank's pressure while your'e in there, and listen for that pump as well.

Try pulling the codes from the computer. They might tell you a great deal. Here's a link to the procedure:Fuel Injection Technical Library » How To Run a Self-Test

Hope this helps!

They are on two separate lines. Looks very strange to me as well. I will do some more probing when I get back home. Thanks for all the help

I'm glad I'm able to help! Im gonna give you two pictures which may be an aid to you:

This picture shows the large test connector that is used to pull codes. It points out the fuel pump terminal on it. If you ground that terminal like the book says, and turn the truck to RUN, the fuel pump will run continuously. This will allow you to check the pressure better. Just use the selector switch to select the pump.

This next picture is of the fuel system plumbing. AS LONG AS your 89 is like the 91, it should look something like this.

It sounds like someone mounted a filter to your truck's return fuel line, since you said it goes the other direction. Possibly, anyway.

Hope this helps!

That's what I was thinking. I don't think the truck was maintained very well. I went ahead and ordered two fuel pumps and a fuel pressure regulator. Insurance if nothing else

I have an 89 with a 460 that does the same thing exactly... the front pump works sometimes and sometimes not... sometimes it will work for a while then quit going down the road.
