I have learned a lot today and I appreciate it. You commented earlier about a 393 being gasoline pig. I got the impression you thought a long rod would be better. If that's what you meant, why is that the case?
BTW my truck is not as light as a lot of people assume. I don't think it is too far shy of 4000 pounds. I need to get it on the scale soon. My 302 is fresh, but it will probably end up in my brother in laws 302. He is dead set against a 351W for fuel consumption reasons. I'm not going to argue with him anymore. It will give me an opportunity to build a fun motor. I am a recent Ford convert. I ran 454 Chebbys for a decade and I miss the torque of a big block. Converting my 53 Ford to a big block would be a huge pain with a Volare IFS. (And expensive) This 351W long rod or stroker is the perfect solution.
It is simply making a stock displacement engine more efficient, with HP increases on the 351 averaging around 75-100hp(touching absolutely nothing else). The few I have experience with have gotten great mileage in comparison to the 393, with the heavily modified one running almost exactly the same as a similarly-equipped 393 mustang(both the long rod 351 and 393 are in similar year mustangs, almost identical Elapsed times....).
