For the last couple of months, I've noticed my truck putting out white smoke/water vapor, but only when the truck is cold and the outside temp is cold (<30°F), and it only lasts for about the the first few miles that I drive and it's gone. The water vapor (assuming that's what it is) spews out the tail pipe pretty good, but dissipates quickly, leading me to believe it's water vapor, however once in a while, it will be a cloud of white smoke, I can tell because it doesn't dissipate like the water vapor, it hovers and hangs around a minute, like smoke does. The truck seems to run fine, no power loss or rough starts. I just would like to know if this is cause for concern, or is it normal. Is it normal to see white smoke/water vapor when the outside temp is cold, and the engine is cold? I rather catch a problem early (if there is one) before other things go wrong.
Mine has been doing this too. Lots of people will say it's normal when cold, but it really isn't. I suspect I have a bad glow plug, glow plug module, or maybe FICM causing one cylinder to not burn well until it warms up. Mine definitely smells like diesel, see if you're smells like diesel or coolant.
I wanna say for the most part, it has a strong diesel smell. My ficm was replaced a couple years ago, and the voltage readings are good, I don't suspect that, however the glow plugs, that sounds like a possibility. If it were a glow plug, would it cause a code?
I think they should throw a code, but they don't always. It depends on what has failed. I'm mad at myself for not throwing new glow plugs in when I did head gaskets and oil cooler at 100k.
I've also have the same symptoms. The smoke seems to go away when the ECT reaches 150-160... And have noticed raw diesel out of the tail pipe from time to time when i let 'er warm up... How could you tell if its a glow plug? A Infrared heat gun on each cylinder at the manifold when its cold?
