worn out question

i know this question has probably been asked a million times but i was just wondering something. the other day i went to start my truck, and it turned over for about 5-7 seconds and then fired up, and this huge puff of white smoke came out of the pipe. the truck had sit all night and the temp dropped to about 24 and warmed up to about maybe 35 in the afternoon, thats when i started it up, in the afternoon, so the engine was pretty cold when i fired it up. i usually plug it in when the temp goes to 32 or lower but i didnt, so was it normal for the truck to turn over extra long and puff out the white smoke??

The worn out answer is: Yes, completely normal for a cold start.

As cookie88 said, completely normal. How many miles do you have on your truck? You might have one or more bad glow plugs, but even with all the glow plugs working normally a puff of white smoke is not uncommon in cold temperatures. If it continually smokes then you should start by checking the glow plugs and glow plug relay.

Yep - everything sounds normal - especially if you're used to how it starts when you do have it plugged in. I have never plugged my truck in yet - but I was "told" that if you do plug it in ALL the time that it can get used to that somehow, and will start harder when not plugged in.

thanks guys, i thought it was normal too, but just wanted to ask anyways. johndiesel, i have 50K on my truck, so with that amount of miles is there a concern of maybe a glowpulg failing, or do i not have enough miles on the engine yet to worry about the plugs?

If you only have a puff of smoke I would think that your glow plugs are fine, especially when you were starting the truck at those temps without plugging it in.
