2003 Ford Explorer transmission problems

2003 Ford Explorer transmission problems
My Explorer started to shift slow from 1st to 2nd. I ordered servos hoping that is the problem. While I waited for parts,I allowed my wife to continue to drive it and it unexpectedly stopped working completely after sitting all day...no forward...no reverse. I plan to remove the pan next week. My question is, what are the likely causes for a transmission to completely fail while sitting parked? What should I look for first? What should I test? Are there any helpful threads that I should read?

I started with adding fluid. It did not appear to be low. I ordered a filter and gasket, but it stopped moving before I received my parts. My hope is to only drop the pan once...wish me luck.
