I've got what may be a dumb idea. Can I Permatex my old carb spacer gasket to my new one and install it or am I having a brain fart?. I've got clamps that I can use that will ensure an airtight seal. I rebuilt my carb today and I'm installing it tomorrow and was just wondering. Would it help in anyway?
Thanks for any help.
i did that on my 460 when i switched to another carb and it was hitting the intake, i just barely spread some on it. problem is the studs wont have enough length for another 1/4" thick gasket, be aware of that man.
Thanx 763, I'll test fit the combo in the morn to see if theres any problems with stud length or clearance. It's a 2 bbl on a 400 and I've got the short aluminum air cleaner. I'll match the imprint to the carb base and hope it doesn't suck air. If anybody reads this and says NO DON'T DO IT! I'll follow thier lead. I wont start this til noon sunday so that should allow enough time for this idea to be kiboshed if it's really a brain fart. thanx again
Why are you doing this? In other words, what problem are you trying to solve, and what is preventing you from using a standard spacer-to-manifold gasket?
I don't recommend any kind of gasket sealer under the carburetor or spacer because it's very high vacuum. There's also no reason for sealer here if all surfaces are clean and flat, and the gaskets are healthy. That's why the only reason I can guess you would do otherwise is because you have an underlying problem that you have not described in your original question.
Hey hi there FMC400. Theres no underlying problem, it's just that I rebuilt the carb this afternoon and I was sittin back, saw the 2 gaskets and wondered if I put the 2 of them together would it act like a slightly longer runner. Then the thought was, would there be a vacumn leak, and if not, would it be worth the effort. Thats why I put out the line that if someone said "no don't do it" I'd file it under brain fart #92 and just put in the new gasket. It sounds like you think this is a Homer Simpson idea and I know that you've been at this long enough that if you think it's a dopey idea, it means it is. Thanx my query has been answered, have a good day/morning enjoy the sunrise. Perry
Bad idea ,I would not use sealer under the carb, just get some longer studs and a spacer plate if you want to lift it. You are just asking for problems. If it's not worth doing right then it's not worth doing.____
Thank you everybody for your replies, I knew that it was a border line idea but just wanted to make sure that I got talked out of it. Tis better to ask and prevent a stupid mistake than to make one and spend 3 hours or more repairing the mistake. I used to tell new employees that if they had any doubts or questions in any way shape or form to ask me or who ever was in charge of the site. Commit an act of stupidity twice and your gone and if it's bad enough you'll be gone the first time. Had no problems with that rule until I moved to Calgary.
Anyway the carb is on and the Henry is running like a charm. According to the op's log book outside of fuel and air filters this is the first time the carb has been worked on since Sept 78. The op made log in a Hilroy of everything that was ever done to the truck. Nice.
thanx again everyone, have a good day, you gave me one.
