Yesterday I headed towards Lake Tahoe up hwy 88, no load in the truck no trailer. The trans temp gauge pegged red, dash light came on and the OD light on the gear selector was flashing.
I canceled my trip and headed home, the temp came down but stayed in the yellow zone. I did not notice any issues with shifting etc.
When I arrived home and the trans had a chance to cool down, I checked the fluid level and condition. The fluid is still red, does not smell burnt.
I had the filter and fluid changed 4500 miles ago and this is the first issue.
I tried to look up the cooler bypass valve in an online parts schematic but I do not see it listed.
Would this valve close and cause fluid to not flow to the cooler?
There is a bypass, but it's sole purpose is to provide lubrication to the transmission in the event of a cooler obstruction. The first step here is to check for obstructions in front of the cooler. If there isn't anything blocking airflow to the cooler then you want to remove the return line that goes back to the transmission, attach a section of clear tubing, and place the end of the tubing in a bucket. Have a friend start the truck and run it for 15 seconds and shut it off; if less than a quart is pumped out you have a problem with flow to the cooler.
Use two buckets. With the hose in the first bucket wait for the flow to be steady. Once it is steady move the hose to the second bucket for 15 seconds then back to the first bucket and shut the engine off. There needs to be at least one quart in the second bucket.
If fluid sprays out of the trans where you removed the line shut the engine down. That indicates either a failed bypass or more likely a plugged cooler/damaged cooler line.
Well the trans started howling from a standing start so, sounds like it is on its way south. Found one for $500 at the truck recycler with < 60K miles on it.
