I have a 1965 Ford F100 that used to have a 240 6 cylinder. I replaced with a 390. I bought the throttle cable for the 352 V-8. It is too long and the hole in the firewall is really low. The cable comes out just behind the driver side valve cover and it would hit the cover. I see other places in the padding where other holes could have been drilled, but they were not. I assume this is factory and that the other hole pattern is for the V-8. I don't want to keep drilling holes in the firewall. Has anyone dealt with this swap?
The throttle cable location is identical for all of these trucks regardless of the engine. There should be a long black mounting bracket that bolts to the engine side of the firewall..the cable attaches to this. The routing of the FE cable is tight and I would imagine getting a new straight cable to turn into an S/corkscrew type shape is difficult but thats how the original routing was on the FE application.
Theres no need to drill other holes..the knockouts you see on the inside were on all of them but only a couple ended up getting used.
The photos are great. I don't have the mounting bracket so the part numbers are a big help too. I would have NEVER dreamed that the cable was twisted that way. Thanks.
I can't see the bracket in your photos. What in the does it look like?
I played with the cable this evening and my bracket won't work. I can make most anything, but I would like to know what this part really looks like. Any help would be appreciated. I'm getting tired of my Garage Art. It's sat in my basement for 5 years. I think its time to turn it back into ROAD Art. Thanks again.
Heres a better picture of the bracket and retracting spring clip.
the bracket is correct, however the Spring clip (L shaped piece with red arrow pointing to it) Actually bolts up near the ign coil on some applications. At least thats what the pictures in section 10 of fords truck shop manual indicates.I just set mine up like this because it works good with this after market carb.
I see said the blindman. My bracket is nothing like that. Back to the junkyard. I have a local yard with a lot of these parts. If not, I'll make something similar. You have been a great help.
"The bracket" is about six inches long and about 1.5 inches wide. It bolts to the firewall with two bolts. The acc cable goes in this bracket, through the firewall and attaches to the acc with a spring ball. The bracket tilts up where the cable enters. MrC559 does not have this bracket. I usually remove the bracket, plug all holes related to it's installation and drill a new hole slightly to the right and up about 1/2 inch and install a LoKar acc cable. This will clear the rockers on an FE and a 460. The end results will look clean much like MrC559's setup. Easy swap but not original. LoKar knock off's available from ebay.
I have the same setup as the photos except I have no way to attach the throttle cable. There are no holes in the firewall for anything else. So, I'm going to make a piece like the bracket in the photo. It should work. If not, there's always a cut-off wheel and some cable stops. I should be able to make it work. Thanks everyone.
