What is this?

I've seen these in pics now and then, but never in person. Is it aftermarket? A roadside emergency kit?

103 views and not even a guess, wow. I'd guess yes on the aftermarket, what ever it is. Maybe a first aid fit since its red, but looks to have a open seam around the bottom.

Sort of looks like a old emergency road reflector kit, the metal top and bottom become the base when folded open with the reflectors hinged to fold up when opened???

What ya got folks?

X2 with 77&79F250. My dad had some laying in the yard and they were reflectors. For me, it was just something I had to watch out for when cutting the grass!

I've never seen anything like it. We might just have to wait until ND stops by.

I am in farm country and I have seen those a lot , mostly at farm auctions. Guys keep the in tractors, behind the seat of the old grain trucks. Dont think they were made by Ford and they sure were not stock with our trucks.

A member of the 1948/56 forum posted a pic of an emergency kit he bought at a farm auction, contained flares and triangle shaped warning signs. It was minty, brand new, never used.

The metal box was green, had the old timey Ford blue oval script (on a decal along w/a 1942/47 Ford truck part number). I couldn't find the part number listed after 1947, so it may have been for tractors only.

When I bought my 1974 F350 in 1988, it came with a similar set of emergancy reflectors under the hood, attatched to the left inner fender, and they are still there. Mine has a cage with a hinged top section to remove the reflectors. There are three seperate clam shells, that open up, with 2 small reflectors that stand up, and also has a red cloth inside, as well as a spring loaded rod, possibly to hang the red clothes from? On the steel clam shell body, it says:
Peterson Mfg. Co,
Kansas City MO.,
No.450,
Vanguard Flare
Being a Ford, and only 39 years old, I have never needed to use the reflectors, but I keep them there in case I stumble upon a dead Chevy, Dodge, or 6.0 Powerstroke on the highway.

I've got a set of them and they've never been used, they were a dealership bribe according to the op. Apparently the wheel chock was also a bribe item. The flags lost thier cherries for these pics, that spring rod is your flag staff and goes into the small holes to the right of the reflectors. They are spring loaded so that you can fold them up and hold the flags in. Mine are in a green case with a 2 piece clip latch and yes we used them on the rear fenders of our tractors and on the fartest point out on our cultivators so that speedsters could see us when we swung onto the highway to do our return harrow. I'm still trying to get this pic thing right, if you can't get to my library through this, try my thread "retirement project" it worked for me last night.

Thumbs up Reflector Kit

It makes sense that this is a reflector kit and that the idea would have originated from tractors as they often travel down the public roads between neighboring farms swapping equipment. So if you've got a truck on the farm, why not equip that with some safety precautions also? I might want to get a set for my truck now. We will be using our '78 SuperCab to tow a '73 camping trailer and something like that might come in handy one day.
