Dull Drivetrain Driveability

Im kinda stumped. Ok so we all know 70 mph in a 40 year old truck is a p.i.t.a.
Hence why vehicles these days all have overdrives. Ive got a shot C6 auto. Recently scored a complete conversion dirt cheap on a really nice 4 speed T18 with new parts.

If you check out richmonds gear calculator and compare to 3.07 or 3.25, it looks like the current 3.73 ratio has gotta go, or does it?

A new rear end is a hefty expense. 1st gear will still be rediculous, And then wont that make 2nd and 3rd gear a little too spread out? If you live where there are tons of hills its frustrating to climb one if you are not at the speed at the right rpm.

Is it possibly better to just save up towards a tremec 5 speed? Thats even more expensive, but would be awesome.

The other alternative is a Gear Vendor Overdrive. A touch less coin but still up there.

I'd go and am going for "awesome". Contact Modern Driveline when you're ready. They've got the skinny on swapping into a 2WD Bump or a Dent (with an FE). The TKO-500 has a 0.68 fifth gear so a 4.10 rear gear will act like a 2.80 and a 3.73 will act like a 2.54. The latter may be too low depending on the speed ya normally drive.

But first, I'm going E-Street EFI on my 4WD Dent. My 2WD bump project is going to get the TKO first and is gonna be carb'ed for now. EFI on that thing is on the to-do list.

If your going with a manual, look into the Ranger Gear Splitter.

Thanks but no thanks. I'm going with the TKO-500. Money isn't an issue... I play in the stock market.

Dave, If your truck is a 100, with a Nine Inch rear, swapping ratios aint no biggie. You can swap one out in an hour by yourself. I have forgotten which ratio it currently is running, (3.00 or 3.25) because the last swap was about 10 years back.

Maintaining 70 mph on the big road is no problem with my truck. Passing gas pumps on the other hand is, but somehow I suspect you already have a full understanding of that.
