4.0 Manual Tranny No 5th Gear

5Th gear is gone, any ideas???? It grinds going into gear but no output. I still have to use the clutch to put in gear but no results. That's the only gear giving me trouble. How difficult are these to tear down. I don't have much to lose, I have another vehicle to drive if I need to do something else after destroying while I'm looking for a replacement.

At least it is 5th gear (any other gear would be worse) Sometimes I don't even use 5th gear. (When towing my johnboat or driving in the hill country) Unless you are worried about miles per gallon and do some higher speeds on the interstate, I would wait to overhaul the transmission. Overdrive .... Who needs it? (J/k)

Yeah, no 5th stinks but it could be worse. I do a good bit of interstate and it is horrible having people pass me while I'm going 65. That's about 2,500 RPM's. I usually run about 80 at the same RPM so I feel like I'm crawling. I may try to find one that's already torn up and buy it to see if I can rebuild just so I have a spare before I tear mine apart. I know I can get it taken out without a problem, its just kind of iffy past that.

What year of ranger?

Engine?

2wd or 4wd?

A haynes/Chilton manual would be a good start for the DIY'er.

The repair manuals are useless, nothing in them other than the standard troubleshooting stuff. Nothing at all about a trans. in them. I can't even find a repair manual for this manual trans.
the M5R1 or whatever it is.

Relevant or not, I don't know:
But, a Nissan pickup was doing that (dad's), and we found it to be a bent shift fork. The actual fork was straightened, reinstalled, and no problems.
But, who can say for sure? It has to be split, no matter what...
