302 or 255

So i have an engine, i believe it is a 302, but i have been told it could be a 255 which i don't want. I bought it from a friend who had it in an 83 fox body, he claims it is not the original motor, but he only owned the mustang for about 1.5 years before he sold the motor to be.

The casting code is E0AE DC3



next to it is a small place that is screwed on that read 3D8



and on the top rear behind the intake there is a partial vin that reads DHxxxxxx

So do i have a 302 or 255?

Look at the intake manifold. If it is open, requiring a valley pan, it is a 255. 302s have a solid intake, no open runners.

Said to be a 255:

Guess i should have put in the first post that it has an edelbrock performer rpm intake on it.

Edelbrock says that won't fit a 255:

Ports are oval, manifold might bolt up, but wouldn't work very well.

How well would it run if it was to be put on a 255? This engine ran pretty well when removed from the mustang.

They talk about port mismatch, so it would probably, at best, run just like a 255 with 114 horse or whatever. I'd expect it to load up at idle or low rev running, as with a mismatch, you have 8 perfect spots for fuel to come out of suspension at low engine speeds.

Pull the heads, you want new gaskets anyway, and you want to look at those pistons as well.
