I really feel for young renters these days. Landlords are so selective that it is ridiculous if you have anything but perfect credit. When we were young renters, they took pretty much anyone who could scrape together a first/last/security. Then it was just month to month. If you didn't pay the rent, you would be evicted pretty quickly. But it was easy to get in and out. I think we rented for about 6-7 years, and never signed a lease at any of the places.
Then the government came along and decided to "help". They put in restrictions and procedures on evictions. Landlords could be stuck with non-paying tenants for a year or more, particularly if there were kids. So they had to become selective to protect themselves. Another instance of unintended consequences of good intentions.
And don't even get me started on this rent control baloney!
