Suspension Question

Hey Guys,

I have a 69 F100 and I want to put disc brakes on it, for which I was told to get the parts of a 73ish truck and they would work, simple enough.

I also want to lower the truck about 2" in the front and put a slight rake in its stance.

Do I still get the parts off the 73ish truck and just get 2" drop spindles for that year truck and put them on mine? I have tried to search for this topic on FTE hoping that someone with my year range has attempted this as well but I didnt find aything. Can someone point me in the right direction?

I have searched the internet as well and i read things about bending my I beams to make the drop and cutting stuff off........ That seems a little sketchy.

What if I just put air bags on it? Is that costly?

I'm not sure if someone has that specific answer. A lot of stuff you are going to want to do is going to be "trial, modification, error, re modification, start over, and build"

at least thats how it goes for me

But seriously, its going custom work is just that, custom. I would just get the 73 stuff and see what it would take to drop it 2"

Hey Trey, Yeah I was figuring that. I did find out from my father in law who has a 66 F100 that in order to lower the truck I have to get Drop I Beams and they are $800 for the pair. He lowered his truck but has not converted them to Disk brakes so I will get to experiment with that part. So for bow Im saving up for the drop I beams. and working out some other design issues with mods I want to accomplish. I hope next weekend to convert to electronic ignition and do a full tune up!

Well best of luck. I dont know much about those trucks, but I'm a good (ok moderate) tool hander if you ever want an extra set of eyes.

I just looked on the Truck Shop website. (Truck and Car Shop is located in Orange, CA)

They sell both a front disc conversion kit and 3" drop axles for your truck. If you want power brakes youll have to come up with your own booster however. The 73 disc brake conversion is pretty common with the slick (61-66 bodystyle) guys that have trucks with the twin-I fronts. Just search the Slick section of FTE for info on that swap.

The front discs on my truck are from CPP also based in the OC however they dont appear to have kits for your truck. There are plenty of resources out there that should have kits for your brake conversion as well as the beams. (BOTP, NPD, LMC, Dennis Carpenter to name a few). I would avoid LMC and NPD when you can but shop around to see who has what you want at the right price. There is a ton of info on FTE about these front end swaps so just search around (the search function isnt all that great i know).

As far as im concerned tho there shouldnt be an issue with putting any of the disc brake kits on a pair of drop beams, the beams "should" keep the geometry the same so i cant see there being an issue. But then again i havent dealt with a twin-I truck before.

Another option to look in to might be getting your existing beams bent but i dont know of anyone in VTA that does that, just something to consider.

Happy Hunting

FYI the Santa Paula PYP yards may have the parts you need, not sure tho, they didnt used to have the older trucks but the past couple times ive been there theyve had a few. That yard can be a tad bit pricey but still cheaper than the $650 the Truck Shop wants for their kit
