Sick 7.3

Looking for some advise.
Have a 03 f350 7.3ltr, 6speed manual. smoking on accelerationwhen hot. Blue smoke...Also blue smoke at cold start up. The colder the more it smokes.Trubo whines 1500rpm free spool no load. turbo does not whistle anymore although I still get 26plus lbs boost at full load. Motor is stock except for Banks Brake, 4" exaust, Banks programmer/chip. No cat. on exaust.
I am betting turbo is bad????? 132,000miles
Any advise?
Thanks,Mark

blue smoke means:
  • fuel not completely burned
  • on engine start: the engine is cold and the glow plugs aren't working correctly. search for how to check GPR (Glow Plug Relay) and then you can check the Glow Plugs themselves.
  • I have never seen blue smoke under load when hot. Smoke under load is (in my experience) black. Something is amiss there, I think.
On the turbo, pull of the intake tube and see if you have free spinning turbo, with minimal up/down, side/side and in/out movement. The impeller should not be touching the intake housing.

Am I missing something here. I thought that blue smoke indicated the burning of oil. White smoke indicated unburnt fuel and black smoke indicated incomplete burning of the fuel or over fueling with a lack of oxygen. I would like to make certain I have a good understanding. I know someone will correct me if I am misunderstanding the smoke issue.

I guess it depends on what you define as blue, black or white.
White to me is steam out the exhaust. Usually smells like coolant.
Black, I agree with your definition. Don't sniff it.
Blue is unburned fuel out the exhaust. Smells like diesel.

These are my definitions as far as smoke, others may have different definitions.

This might be of some help to read.

Diesel Smoke tells YOU a Story…

(I am not endorsing any products on that page, it is posted only for 'smoke' info)
